This win put South Hobart in third place, only a point behind the leading pair, Tilford Zebras and Clarence United.

The loss, combined with Metro-Claremont’s 1-1 away draw with Kingborough Lions United, meant New Town Eagles slumped to last place.

Eagles’ hopes rose when Cormac Collins took advantage of South Hobart’s failure to clear a corner and fired the home side ahead in the 22nd minute.

But, three goals in six minutes by the visitors sank Eagles.

In the 26th minute, Tom Roach’s shot took a deflection off a defender, who could not stop the ball crossing the line, making it 1-1.

Three minutes later, Daniel Brown put the visitors ahead, while in the 31st minute, David Cooper made it 3-1.

Seconds earlier, Cooper had looped a header over the crossbar, while a couple of minutes after his goal, he shot just wide.

Eagles were finding Cooper difficult to handle and they persisted with four at the back, often against only two attackers.

Chris Wass went close for Eagles with a thunderous shot from long range that cannoned off Mark Moncur’s left-hand post, but that was as close as they got to reducing the arrears in the first half.

Grant Nutting came on for the injured Alexander Leszczynski just short of the hour mark when the youngster was injured as Matthew Hill climbed all over him and conceded a free-kick.

Seconds later, Cooper’s speed again took him around the Eagles defence, but his shot from an acute angle was turned wide for a corner by Brian Zielinski.

In the 72nd minute, a wayward pass by Nathan Robinson allowed Scott Telega to gain possession. The Eagles striker was forced wide, however, and his shot from a bad angle was taken comfortably by Moncur, who was in goal in place of former Eagles keeper Sam Kruijver.

South Hobart coach, Steve Adkins, had given the nod to Moncur as Kruijver is shortly to head overseas.

This was Eagles’ sixth loss in succession in the league.

“It was always going to be tough out at Clare Street,” said South Hobart coach, Steve Adkins.

“Last year we came out here and lost 4-3.

“This was a game we really needed to win to stay in touch with the top group and from 1-0 down, I thought we were sensational in the next 20 minutes.

“We got to 3-1 up and could have been 4-1 up.

“It just showed the character is there and the guys can fight back when they’re under pressure.

“Our forwards scored a goal each and the atmosphere around the team at the moment is really good and we’re looking forward to Clarence next week.”
