Metro-Claremont earned their second point in as many weeks with this draw against the reigning league champions, Glenorchy Knights.

The champions will really struggle to regain their title and are now 10 points adrift of league-leaders Tilford Zebras.

Second-last Metro are 2 points ahead of bottom side New Town Eagles, who lost 2-0 to Taroona the same afternoon. New Town Eagles have equalled their worst run since 1970, which was the last time they lost nine 90-minute games in a row.

Eagles may well set a new club record next Saturday when they have a difficult Milan Lakoseljac Memorial Trophy state-wide match against Somerset at Clare Street.

Glenorchy Knights dominated the opening half against Metro, although Royston Dutton squandered a great chance for the home side in the 17th minute when he ran on to Terry Kent’s free-kick and found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat, but the lanky striker shot straight at Ben Peter.

In the 23rd minute, Metro were lucky to survive when Matthew Brown hammered a tremendous rising shot against Neil Biggar’s crossbar which threatened to shatter the woodwork.

A minute later, Tom Huigsloot’s shot was deflected for a corner as Metro again survived the Knights’ onslaught.

And then, in the very next minute, Biggar did well to save with his legs at the feet of Nick Harrison.

Metro’s luck ran out in the 39th minute when Josh Fielding curled a low shot from the edge of the box through a crowd of players and just inside Biggar’s right-hand post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes after the resumption, Huigsloot had the ball in the net, but Mr Ware’s flag was raised for off-side.

Metro’s player-coach, Matthew Gasparin, took the free-kick and sent the ball high into the opposing half. Knights’ sweeper, Corey Smith, made a hash of his attempted clearance and succeeded only in knocking the ball and towards his own goal.

Shane Kent was on to it like a flash and he beat the advancing goalkeeper to knock the ball into the net for the equaliser.

In the 64th minute, Huigsloot put Rob Gosney away on the left and he sent in an inviting low cross across the goalmouth, but Harrison missed it.

In the 73rd minute, Fielding’s cross from the right towards the far post was nodded home by Huigsloot, but again Mr Ware’s flag was raised and the effort was disallowed by Mr Collins.

Knights brought on Giovanni Vasile in place of Harrison for the last four minutes, but Metro hung on for the point.

“A valuable point,” said Metro-Claremont’s player-coach, Matthew Gasparin.

“As opposed to a few other weeks, absolutely rapt with today’s performance.

“Knights are a quality side, but credit to our guys who kept persevering and kept putting pressure on them.

“At no stage during the game did our heads go down, so it was really good.

“To have people like Adam McKeown and Phil Curran and Shane Kent stand up and men, I suppose, was really good for a change.

“It was excellent stuff.”

Glenorchy Knights player-coach, Tom Huigsloot, said: “A pretty ordinary performance. We didn’t take our chances.

“A couple of decisions could have gone our way, but that’s life.”

Glenorchy Knights defender, Janko Begovic, said: “We didn’t play well enough and we didn’t take our chances and that’s about all I’ve got to say.”
