Clarence United’s bubble burst when they lost their first league game of the season, 2-0 away to sixth-placed University at Olinda Grove.

The loss dropped Clarence a place to third and allowed South Hobart, 1-0 winners away to Taroona, to move into second place, six points adrift of league-leaders Tilford Zebras.

University were again without midfielder Colin Shepherd, who has a finger infection and is not allowed to play because of medical advice.

Brook Teale was a surprise inclusion in the University side. The club thought he was suspended after collecting five yellow cards, but Football Federation Tasmania has him recorded as having had only four cautions.

This was a dour struggle with both sides missing gilt-edged chances.

The first came in the 8th minute following a beautiful attacking move by University. Mark Rapley expertly pulled the ball back with the sole of his boot near the half-way line on the left and accelerated away from Scott Hadley.

Rapley then released Gerard O’Brien down the left and he crossed low and hard towards the far post, where the unmarked Craig Stockdale, who had left his defensive duties to push forward, shot tamely straight at Michael Moschogianis from close range instead of scoring.

In the 32nd minute, Ashley Winter had to dive low to his right to turn Luke Cripps’s shot wide for a corner.

Four minutes before the break, Julian Proud missed a header at the far post from Brook Teale’s left-wing cross.

Clarence attacked strongly in the closing minutes of the first half as, first, Jacob Huigsloot drove just wide from range, and then Jayden Walsh cut in from the left and fired narrowly wide of the far post.

In the 56th minute, Clarence found themselves four against four in attack, but Walsh shot over the bar.

The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when Moschogianis dropped Teale’s free-kick and Rapley smashed the loose ball into the net to give the home-side the lead.

Three minutes later, Clarence should have been level, but Paul Bremner missed an absolute sitter.

In the final minute, Stockdale headed home Teale’s corner to make it 2-0 and move University up a place to fifth on the ladder.

University claimed the Andrew Hoppitt Memorial Shield, named after the Students’ late goalkeeper. The trophy is awarded on the result of the first league meeting between the sides each season. University also won it last year by a 2-0 score-line.

“It’s always nice to win,” said University coach, Matthew Shaw. “It’s a relied as well after losing the last couple.

“Against a good, well-organised side, it’s important that, if you’re going to try to be one of the better sides, you’ve got to go and beat the others that are amongst the better sides.

“It’s nice.

“Lots of intensity and effort off the ball that meant that on the ball lots of mistakes were made.

“People were always feeling under pressure. They put us under pressure and we put them under pressure, so you can’t really fault the defensive intensity.

“Now, we just have to get a bit more composed on the ball and knock in the chances when they come.”

Clarence United coach, Andrew Brown, said: “Disappointing, not only to lose the game, but more so in the way we played.

“Sometimes, I think the harder they try to do things, the worse they perform, and it was one of those today.

“They’re young, they’re developing, and sometimes you try too hard. And I think they tried too hard, which stopped them from playing football.

“And then you end up in a very dour, grinding game and very uninspiring, and that’s not what we’re here to watch.”
