Clarence United ended a run of five matches without a win to beat the visiting reigning champions and fourth-placed Glenorchy Knights 2-1.

They played for 50 minutes with only ten men after Ben Parker received a second yellow card in the 39th minute.

Glenorchy Knights were devoid of ideas and simply could find no way to make the most of their numerical advantage.

Clarence’s Toby Ling and Scott Hadley defended stoutly, while goalkeeper Michael Moschogianis made two crucial saves in the second half to deny Jonathon Ladic and Janko Begovic.

Dwayne Walsh struggled to make an impact for much of the match, his poor first touch often letting him down, but he did help Chris Hunt’s shot over the line for Clarence’s equaliser.

Paul Bremner was also not at his sharpest and he should have done better with the chances he was given. In the 24th minute, he was presented with an opening but fired into the side-netting when he should at least have brought the goalkeeper into action.

Josh Fielding was busy for the Knights but tended to hold the ball for too long instead of passing, while Ladic often lacked penetration when in possession. His second-half shot was excellent and required a good save by Moschogianis to prevent a goal.

Rob Gosney was tidy on the ball but he was often a lone force in midfield for the Knights.

Begovic almost scored in the second half with a difficult shot aimed at the bottom left-hand corner, but Moschogianis blocked it on the line. Ironically, it was Begovic who conceded the free-kick in injury time that enabled Kenyi Emmanueli to hit the winner.

Knights suffered a set-back after only five minutes when Marcus Burn had to go off injured after a tackle by Parker. He was replaced by Matthew Brown, who was himself substituted just short of the hour mark.

Tom Huigsloot had a lean afternoon and rarely had any good chances. His best came in the second half when he was unmarked at the far post but headed a left-wing cross harmlessly over the bar.

Clarence coach Andrew Brown was furious at the dismissal of Parker. Many a coach would have been sent off the bench for the remarks he directed at the referee.

Tony Dzelalija scored following a corner on the half-hour by Fielding to give the Knights the lead.

Clarence equalised in the 65th minute when Ben Peter failed to hold Chris Hunt’s shot and Walsh helped the ball into the net.

Emmanueli smacked a great shot against the inside of the far post late in the match, the ball rebounding into play and being cleared by the Knights defence.

And then came the late winner, in the 3rd minute of time added on.

“It was a coming of age for our boys,” said Clarence coach, Andrew Brown. “We went out in the second half, a goal down and a man down, determined to win and not to draw, and we did it.”
